Prep Your House: 4 Home Updates to Make When Moving to a New Climate

The United States is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. This means that citizens have the freedom to choose from a host of different climates when looking for a place to call home. Whether moving to the southwestern portion of the country for warmer weather or heading north for some seasonal weather, you’re bound to find something amazing about each place. It is important to remember that each of these climates comes with its own unique challenges. Homeowners may have to make a few adjustments to their housing plan in order to adjust to a new climate. Here are four home updates to consider when moving to a new climate.

Proper Roofing

Houses aren’t always built with the same roofing materials. For example, houses in the Midwest are typically constructed with rough shingles. This ensures that the roof can endure all types of weather seen in this part of the country throughout the year. In warmer areas, such as Arizona and Nevada, homes are built with clay shingles instead. These shingles help to absorb some of the heat to help keep the houses cooler. This is one of the considerations that should be made when moving to a different climate.

Basement Remodeling

Basements are great spaces to have in a new home. In fact, many people move in order to build a new home with a basement. When moving to a new climate, it is important to consider the local weather and how your basement could be impacted. It is always a good idea to invest in basement waterproofing. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways and ensures that excess rain doesn’t result in expensive flooding. Excess water can destroy basements and should be avoided if possible.  

Outdoor Living Spaces

Having an outdoor living space is a great way to feel more connected with nature. There is something serene about enjoying a nice book with a view of the backyard. These outdoor living spaces vary in design depending on where a home is located. For example, homes in warmer areas may only have furniture set outside without any form of enclosure. Houses situated in colder climates will typically have outdoor living spaces in an enclosure with large windows. When moving to a new climate, it is important to determine what kind of outdoor living space would be suitable given the weather in the area.  

Landscaping Material

Landscaping materials are another important consideration when moving to a new climate. The materials that should be used to adorn your landscape will depend on the weather experienced year around in the area. Rocks and other stones are typically used in warmer areas because these materials are more durable.
