Summer Prep: 4 Tips for Building the Best Deck for Entertaining

Want to add a bit of luxury to your backyard? Building a deck is a great way to spice of your outdoor living space. Decks can be anything from a simple platform a few inches off the ground or an intricately designed, multi-tiered structure with steps and other amenities. Keep reading for four tips for making your new deck a standout part of your home.

Determine Your Needs and Wants

Part of building the perfect deck involves determining what your needs and wants are for your deck. Identify whether or not you plan to use the space for entertaining, dining, leisure, or a similar reason. This will help you decide whether or not you need built-in seating, outdoor storage, planters, an outdoor pit, or similar features. Additionally, consider the type of view you’d be taking advantage of with the deck. Glass panels can be used in your deck to allow for an unobstructed view of the yard.

Decide Where You Want the Deck

Your deck should be placed in an optimal place that takes advantage of shade without limiting exposure to sunlight. For example, if you live on the east coast, your deck should be located towards the west or south-facing side, as this will optimize sunlight. If you hope to avoid the sun, this outdoor space can built in an east or south facing area. Just as you need to consider access to sunlight, you should assess your level of privacy. Depending on the height of your fence, building a deck too high may making maintaining your privacy difficult.

Think about the Size of Your Deck

Your deck should be large enough to accommodate your needs. Do you plan to have large dinner parties? Are you hoping to outfit your deck with several pieces of outdoor furniture? Make sure your proposed deck is large enough to fit every feature you plan to include. Before beginning construction on your deck, ensure that your building plans include all the proper dimensions of the features you are hoping for. Whether it’s a fire pit, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, or something similar, it’s important to have accurate measurements. Also make sure you have the right amount of equipment for the size of your future deck. Find timber for sale in large amounts to avoid running out of materials during the building process.

Complement Your Home’s Design

Designing your new deck is as much about fitting your needs as it is about fitting the current design of your home. Your deck’s design should complement your home’s architecture. By reaching out to an architect, you’ll be able to ensure whichever design you choose is able to fit in with the style of your home.
