3 Unexpected Ways to Use a Statement Rug to punch up your space

3 Unexpected Ways to Use a Statement Rug By Merri Cvetan – Guest Blogger and Interior Design Specialist with Home Depot   Selling your home can be a stressful time. There are so many things to consider before the “For Sale” sign is placed in the front yard. High on the list is staging the interior to convince potential buyers to make an offer. We all know a coat of paint goes a long way to freshen up rooms in the home, but what about accessories? When staging your home for sale, it’s best to pack away personal photos and objects and clear out clutter. The buyer needs to be able to imagine their own furniture and furnishings in the rooms—but that doesn’t mean your home should be boring.   Add personality and pizzazz to make your home stand out from the rest. One inexpensive way to do so is to use area rugs in unexpected places.
  1. Anchor a Seating or Conversational Area

You want to give the buyer ideas for furniture placement or show them how to create a cozy little reading corner in the living room.  Shag rugs have made a comeback and are an important design trend. They invite you to take off your shoes and stay awhile. But don’t worry, this isn’t your grandmother’s shag carpet—today’s styles are soft and plush. Choose one in a neutral color with a bit of sheen.
  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Patterns

Adding a modern, large scale floral rug in muted shades of grey, sage and gold makes a bold statement. I love the contrast of an old-fashion style needlepoint rug in a contemporary print.
  1. Layer Rugs on Carpeting

The straight lines of this classic trellis pattern look great under furniture with round or gentle curves. Go big or small—just make sure the legs of the furniture sit either entirely or partially on the rug. An area rug can also help camouflage worn or dated carpeting.   When choosing your area rugs, forget shopping in the appropriate department. A kitchen rug can be perfect in the bathroom. A bathroom rug works in a nursery or child’s play room. Mix and match until you find your desired aesthetic. For example, try a classic Persian rug with mid-century modern furniture for an unexpected look. Soon you’ll be on your way to a beautifully staged home!   Merri Cvetan is an interior designer who writes for The Home Depot on topics such as “How to use area rugs to punch up your décor.”  She also provides tips on “How to stage your house.”  The Home Depot carries a large selection of area rugs that you can view here.
