“Is Home Staging Tax Deductible?” Ask Your Accountant.
A recent note on a real estate website prompted the question by an Accredited Home Staging Professional®. A client had asked her whether Staging expenses would qualify for a tax deduction. A visit to the website of the IRS, the ASP® shared, didn’t exactly give a clear answer.
Some make the argument that Home Staging is what the IRS qualifies as selling cost, but it’s not really clear from the IRS document. Others argue that Home Staging qualifies for a tax deduction as an advertising expense. That too isn’t exactly clear when you read the IRS text.
My recommendation is to consult your accountant who can give you the correct answer, and make sure clients speak with their accountant as we as ASPs® aren’t qualified to provide tax-related advice.
